Unruly Landscaping in Condo Complex

Most Los Angeles condo associations will have rules and regulations in place when it comes to landscaping. The Association committee should meet to discuss issues such as tree removal, landscaping maintenance, or any hazards that could affect condo owners and the building itself.

The Association pays for building maintenance, and those fees come from each individual condo owner, so the last thing they want to do is cause more problems, which could cause expensive repairs should a tree come down or create some hazards.

Trees and shrubs should be away from the building. If the building is made of wood and has wood siding or similar siding and shrubs and vines are up against the side of the building, it could cause leaves and twigs to make their way up underneath the siding pushing water, dirt, and moisture underneath the siding. This causes dry rot, mildew, mold, pests, and more damage. If condo owners are noticing that the association is not tending to the maintenance and care of the landscaping, it's important to bring these issues before the board.

If a condo owner is concerned about a large tree that probably should be removed, it's important to contact a tree removal specialist and get an evaluation. But, most condo owners do need to attend their Association board meetings in order to make their voice heard. Simply yelling about it to a board member outside of the proper venue, may not solve the problem.

Some condo owners simply say, "well it's not my yard". But in fact, it's everyone's yard. Everyone should take responsibility for the safety and beauty of the entire complex including the landscaping and grounds. Yes, there are common elements and there are personal elements throughout the complex, but when everyone takes pride in ownership, it can maintain safety and security and low Association costs for everyone involved.

If you have a concern about a tree or landscaping on your complex property, attend your next board meeting and bring up your concerns so that everyone has a chance to chime in. You can also come with solutions, making it easier for the board to come to an agreement.
