The Lake Merced district, also known as District 3, is located on the southwest corner of downtown San Francisco south of Sloat Boulevard and north of John Daly Boulevard bordering the coastline stretching to Highway 1. The freshwater lake of Lake Merced is really the focal point in this district surrounded by three golf courses, the Olympic Club, the San Francisco Golf Club and the public TPC Harding Park. There are numerous residential areas, schools, part of the San Francisco State University, as well as other commercial, industrial and residential micro-communities.
Lake Merced is fed by an underground spring and it is said that it once had an outlet to the ocean in the 1800s. Some species of fish inhabit the lake are salt and fresh water adapted but the lake does offer active recreational fishing after better management reversed the shrinking water level and it has been slowing rising since 1990.
Lake Merced includes the micro-neighborhoods of Lakeshore, Pine Lake Park, Stonestown, Merced Manor, Merced Heights, Cceanview, Ingleside Lakeside and Ingleside Heights. There are two main shopping areas, a large municipal Park, several country clubs and the San Francisco Zoo. Residents enjoy hiking and jogging near the ocean as well as fishing and surfing along the beach. Homes range from single family estates to middle-class condominiums and studio apartments. Home prices start at about $400,000 to over $2 million depending on size, condition and location.
