Encinitas is located about 20 minutes or 20 miles north of downtown San Diego just north of Solana Beach and south of Carlsbad along the beautiful I-5 corridor and the Pacific ocean. Home to about 60,000 residents, Encinitas is home to the growing of one of the most ornamental flowers at Christmas time, the poinsettias.
This upper-middle-class coastal Beach city runs parallel with the historical Coast Highway 101 and was originally incorporated in 1986. The word "Encinitas" is derived from the Spanish word for "Little Oaks". There are several communities in Encinitas including Old Encinitas, a small beachside community, New Encinitas, which features a golf course and shopping centers, Olivehain, a semi-rural community of mostly single-family homes, Leucadia, which provides tree-lined streets, art galleries and unique boutiques and finally Cardiff by the Sea. Oftentimes referred to as its own community, Cardiff is the southernmost oceanfront community in Encinitas and features the Lux Art Institute and the San Elijo campus of Mira Costa College.
Encinitas runs along 6 miles of Pacific coastline and is characterized by coastal beaches, beautiful cliffs, coastal parks, rolling hills and steep bluffs. It's often been referred to as the Flower Growing Capital of the country. It is home to the San Diego botanical garden and features one of the largest displays of bamboo in the world.
